January 2019 | MAMSA MERCHANT OF THE MONTH

The St. James’ Thrift Shop was started 50 years ago on September 6, 1968, by a lifelong Mount Airy resident and members of St. James’ Episcopal Church. For many years, the shop was run by volunteers who would sort and sell the clothing and other items that people donated.

The Thrift Shop has a long history of giving back to the surrounding community, often donating clothing and household items to fire victims, and passing on donated items the shop can’t resell to organizations such as the Frederick Rescue Mission, Tails of Hope, foster families, public schools, Lions Club, Mt. Airy NET, Jaycees, A is for Africa, Children of Ecuador, Darby Place Cat Rescue, Dwelling Place, Senior Center, Care Net Pregnancy Center, Hands of Hope, American Legion, Community Ties, Junkin for Jesus, and Wetlands.org.
