Highlights from the 9/14/07 special meeting at Town Hall:

  • Tragic event seen by many as an opportunity to rebuild to make downtown "bigger and better"
  • Plans underway to get displaced businesses into temporary locations, including modular space to be set up in the parking lot in front of the Blossom & Basket Boutique.
  • MAMSA members Knittin' Chicks and Miracles have offered space to Deja Vu and the Do or Dye Salon to help them get back in business as soon as possible.
  • Donations coming in to the Mt. Airy Disaster Relief Fund reached $2,300 by mid-day.
  • A local resident thanked her neighbors and called them heroes for acting quickly to wake herself and other residents before the fire engulfed their apartments. She made a plea for donations to help the 7 families who lost everything in the fire.
  • Local businesses, including Do or Dye salon, Inspiration Point, and Retro Metro, vow to return and thank the fire department, town officials, property owner, and the community for their efforts and support.
  • The Mt. Airy Fire Chief thanked Mayor Johnson for his efforts during the response and the town's support. He clarified that media reports claiming the fire department had to seek approval to use town water were inaccurate.
