Celebrate Summer 2011

Dinner and a Movie will be the featured attraction of this year’s Celebrate Summer event, to be held on Friday and Saturday, July 22 and 23, 2011. This year, the event is a combined effort of the town’s Parks and Rec Committee and the Mount Airy Main Street Association.

The Friday evening event will be held in the Railyard, located at 3 North Main Street in the historic downtown area. On that evening, Mount Airy’s downtown restaurants will be offering special carry-out menus. Terri's will give a 10% discount on all orders and Laurienzo's will give 20% discount.  In both cases, customers must order by phone and identify that they are participating in Celebrate Summer.

Picnic tables will be set up in the Railyard, and from 5:30 to 8:30, Rick Hill will entertain diners as you enjoy a picnic from home or a local restaurant. Rick plays for our Farmer’s Markets – he will entertain the whole family. For the kids, fun summer activities will be available, including hula hoops, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and corn hole. Bring your most comfortable chairs, because at 8:30 (or as soon as it’s dark) the movie The Pink Panther featuring Steve Martin will be shown on the town’s giant inflatable screen. Throughout the evening, snacks such as popcorn, sodas and candy will be available, a fundraiser supporting breast cancer.

Saturday, July 23, will feature a sidewalk chalk art competition and a corn hole contest. Individuals, families or neighborhood groups are welcome to participate in the sidewalk chalk art contest; register at the MAMSA tent in the Railyard at 9:30 on Saturday morning. Teams will be given chalk and assigned a space in the downtown area. Between 10 AM and noon, artists are invited to create their masterpieces. At Noon, the artists must stop, and a panel of judges will select the winners. The winners will be announced at 1:30 over the town’s PA system. The overall grand champion will win a car detailing worth $250 from Century Ford.

Also on Saturday, beginning at 11 AM, a Corn Hole Tournament will begin in the Railyard. Participants can register at the MAMSA tent at 10:30 AM The details of the contest will be posted on the MAMSA website. Fabulous prizes will be awarded to the winners. Visiting artists will have booths set up in the Railyard during the day on Saturday.

We hope that everyone will find time to visit the downtown for these fun, free activities on Friday and Saturday, July 22 and 23

Thanks to All the participating business for making our 2010 Celebration a success.
